Picking A Used Laptop That Fits Your Needs

So you have decided to buy a used laptop. In these times of economic hardship it is a choice that makes a lot of sense. But how do you find one that fits your needs amongst all the choice in the second hand market? We will try to help you make the right decision by helping you ask the right questions when comes the time to buy a used laptop.

Size and weight are two big factors that you should take into consideration when buying a used laptop. After all, laptops are meant to be used on the go, otherwise there is no point in getting one over a desktop. Of course other variables come into play as well like screen size, performances, battery life and price....but all these are related to the size of your used laptop. Indeed, the smaller the laptop, the higher the price generally. Over the years then, laptops have come to be classified into three categories: standards, notebooks and ultra portable (in reality there are even more distinctions but we will keep to these 3 big families for the sake of simplicity).

Standard laptops offer the best performance / price ratio as they are the cheapest and often come equipped with powerful processors. However, this type of used laptops are relatively heavy (over 3kg), and have relatively poor battery life. A standard laptop can be a goo option if you do not travel a lot. You can thus benefit from a larger screen, although the downside to this is that your autonomy will be reduced.

Notebooks may have a less desirable performance / price ratio but are lighter than standard laptops et have better battery life. This type of used laptops can be a good choice if you regularly have to travel with your laptop.

Ultra portable laptops are very small and light since they weigh less than 2kg. Of course, their screen is the smallest of the bunch, which is not ideal if you want to work for extended periods of time or if you want to watch movies on it. They have good battery life but their performances are in general one step behind those of the other used laptops. Even if their prices are slowly coming down, they are still more expensive than the other types of laptops.
